As a full-service machining company, at Tychon, Inc., we have the ability utilize a combination of operations in the production of close tolerance components. We manufactured the transmission module mount pictured here for a client in the robotics industry. This project demonstrates our ability to machine aluminum, use multiple pieces of equipment in our production operations, and supply parts with anodized finishes.
Forming the geometry and features of this transmission mount involved both CNC lathe work and vertical milling. Since manufacturing consisted of multiple operations, we followed a manufacturing plan that outlined a specific sequence of tasks to be accomplished. Our comprehensive work plan ensured that the right equipment was available when needed and the project stayed on schedule.
This transmission module mount featured dimensions of 3.0” in length x 3-1/8” in width x 3-1/8” in height and 6061-T6 aluminum construction. Although aluminum is not difficult to machine, we developed innovative internal techniques to maximize metal removal rates and minimize cycle times. We had the ingenuity to attain repeatable accuracy during turning and milling to ensure the quality of the finished product.
Once we completed machining the mounts, we had a black hard coat anodized finish applied, per customer specifications, to improve the corrosion and abrasion resistance as well as other surface qualities. Hardcoat anodizing involves submerging the parts in a sulfuric acid bath until the coating reached the desired thickness, which was closely monitored to ensure the coated parts stayed within the ±.0003” tolerance limits. We performed a series of quality checks after plating to verify that the finished parts met the customer specification. The order of 25 units was completed within five weeks.
